There is growing evidence that Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese form of exercise practiced by millions of people worldwide every day, has value in treating or preventing many health problems. Tai Chi was accredited to a Taoist Monk named Zhang San Feng as its creator. Tai Chi is a type of Qigong (Chi Kung), which means energy or breath skill, as Tai Chi when practiced correctly is always practiced using Qigong (breathing, energy) methods. Tai chi, which originated in China as a martial art, can be adapted for anyone - from an athlete to an individual confined to a wheelchair or someone recovering from surgery. Tai chi differs from other types of exercise in several respects. The movements are usually circular and never forced, the muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched. In this low-impact, slow-motion exercise, you go without pausing through a series of motions. As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention — as in some kinds of meditation.
